John Franklin Brown
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Brown. Entered service June 1943 at Jacksonville, Illinois. Received training at Great Lakes Naval Station, Chicago, Illinois; Newport News, Virginia. He was placed aboard the U.S.S. Franklin and was sent to the Asiatic Area in the Southwest Pacific. He participated in five Major Battles: Invasion of Guam, Marianas Islands, Peleliu, The Battle for Leyte, Iwo Jima Volcano Islands, also the first part of the Battle of Okinawa. In October, 1944, the U.S.S. Franklin was hit by Kamikaze bombers and he was badly gassed. March 18-19, 1945, an enemy bomber dropped two 500 lbs. bombs on the Franklin and with many others, he lost his life. Just nineteen days before, he made the rate of Yeoman Second Class. Received the Purple Heart, The Victory Medal, and The Bronze Star Medal.
