Son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward G. Evans. Entered service October 26, 1943. Discharged Oct. 1, 1945. Pre-Flight Training, Maxwell Field, Montgomery, Alabama; Primary, Darr Aero Tech., Albany, Georgia; Basic, Courtland, Alabama; Advanced, Columbus, Mississippi, receiving Pilot's Wings; B-17 School, Sebring, Florida; 18th Replacement Wing, Salt Lake City, Utah; Combat Crew Training, Ardmore, Oklahoma. Went overseas April 23, 1944 and was assigned to the 571 st Squadron of 390th Heavy Bomb Group of 8th Air Force where he flew 31 Combat Missions as Lead Pilot in the "Lady Velma ", which was named after the pilot's wife whom the crew had become acquainted with before they went overseas. Returned to U.S. December 4, 1944. Was assigned to the Demonstration Air Force at Orlando, Florida, and placed in charge of the Army Air Forces. Received Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, ETO W/4Star
